Clothes are an investment, and a few small habits in how you wash, dry and store them make the difference between a wardrobe that lasts years and one that needs replacing every season. Here's what actually extends garment life.
1. Wash smart
The washing step does more damage to clothes than anything else, so getting it right is the single biggest thing you can do for garment life.
- Turn garments inside out to protect prints, embellishments and dark fabrics from fading, and to cut down on pilling
- Match the detergent to the fabric: gentle and pH-neutral for delicates, brightening for whites, colour-safe for brights
- Wash in cold water where you can; it's gentler on fibres, protects colour, and uses less energy than a hot cycle
2. Don't overload the machine
A packed drum feels efficient, but it isn't doing your clothes any favours.
- Overloading causes extra friction between garments, which speeds up wear and tear
- Clothes need room to move freely to actually get clean
- A smaller load that washes properly beats a full one that doesn't
3. Air dry when you can
The tumble dryer is the fastest route to a shrunk jumper or a warped shirt. Letting clothes dry naturally protects both their shape and their fibres.
- Tumble drying can shrink clothes and damage delicate fabrics over repeated cycles
- Air drying keeps garments closer to their original shape and quality for longer
- It also saves energy and cuts your carbon footprint
4. Store it properly
How clothes sit in the wardrobe between wears matters just as much as how they're washed.
- Use padded hangers for blouses and jackets, to stop shoulder bumps forming
- Fold knitwear rather than hanging it; hanging stretches heavy knits out of shape
- Use breathable garment bags for long-term storage instead of sealed plastic
5. Repair and rotate
Two habits that cost nothing but add real years to a garment's life: fixing small problems early, and not wearing the same pieces on repeat.
- Sew on loose buttons before they fall off, and patch or darn small holes while they're still small
- Replace a broken zipper rather than writing the whole garment off
- Rotate your wardrobe so no single item gets worn into the ground, and you rediscover pieces you'd forgotten
